Marketing your iPad app

So you’ve got an iPad app, and you’re ready to take it to market.  We’re going to assume that yours is a quality product, and quality is by far the most important factor in determining success.  Second only to that, of course, is making sure your customers know about it, and today we’re going to help you do just that.

  • Know your customer.  The most successful apps out there are those that solve a particular problem for a particular group of people, like smokers who are trying to quit or children who are learning to read.  It’s essential for you to locate your target demographic and tailor your product accordingly.  The more specific your target market, the better.
  • Create a website.  Much ado has been made over “ubiquitous computing,” which imagines a world where computers are everywhere, and in everything, and no one really notices their presence.  For now, anyway, this is still the stuff of science fiction; most people today still do their browsing the old fashioned way, by entering search terms into a browser window on a computer.  Naturally you’ll want those clients to be able to find you on the internet, so you’ll need to create a site that’s visually appealing and clearly demonstrates what your mobile app is designed to do.  You’ll also want to make sure the content is optimized so your site appears at or near the top of the list on search engine results.
  • Use the social networks.  If you saw the film The Social Network, you know Facebook has hundreds of million subscribers worldwide.  According to its statistics page, Facebook has over 750 million active users, with 50% of them logging on daily.  You can’t ignore this.  You’ll need to create a Facebook page for your app and post in it regularly.  You’ll also need to set up accounts in Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+.  You should also ferret out user groups and internet forums likely to attract customers to your app.
  • Reviews.  If you’ve created a mobile app, the chances are you’ve used a few as well.  How did you decide on whether or not to purchase one?  Reviews.  Do everything you can to have reputable reviewers take your app for a test drive – short of paying for it, which can get you blacklisted in the app stores.

App marketing is not easy, but it is vital to the success of your app.  Need help developing or marketing your app?   Visit our Marketing Services page or send me an e-mail.
